Hazardous pesticides and expensive exterminator visits aren’t the only way to control unwelcome insect populations in your home or garden. Diatomaceous earth is a finely ground powder made of naturally occurring rock. This rock is soft, light, and extremely high in silica, making it an effective abrasive powder for a variety of uses, including as a mechanical insecticide. Spread a thin layer of Insect Dust Food Grade DE indoors or outdoors in dark crevices, window frames, attics, basements, and other hiding places, and once in contact, this powder will become lodged in the exoskeleton of the pest, dehydrating, shredding, and eventually destroying it. Because it is a mechanical insecticide rather than a poisonous or toxic insecticide, insects cannot become immune to the effects. This powder is harmless to mammals, though it is lethal to insects with exoskeletons, such as cockroaches, earwigs, crickets, fleas, centipedes, silverfish, ants, ticks, and carpet beetles. Use a dust applicator to apply, and wear a dust mask and eye protection when applying. This bag contains 4.4 pounds of food grade DE. It will treat up to 1,800 square feet.
