From Kitschy to Fabulous: The Revival of the Pink Flamingo

Pink flamingos were all the rage in the 50′s but in recent years have been regaled to kitschy garden ornaments. Now they are back in a big way, bringing a little nostalgia to the design world.

While strolling through Pier 1 Imports recently I saw not only an adorable wicker pink flamingo that would be perfect for lawn, porch or sun room but these charming mugs with flamingo neck handles that would bring a smile to even the worst morning person.

Reports from the Independent Garden Center Show 2001 in August had people abuzz with these flamingos dressed for the holidays! The large display by Pink Inc. showed an updated version of the famous lawn ornament for today’s gardens. These quirky birds are great for the gardener with a sense of humor.

Since the 50’s flamingos have made their appearance on decorative flags, Christmas tree ornaments hats, stemware, and most recently a lovable character in DreamWorks Gnomeo and Juliet.

Flamingo Lawn Flag

Call me old fashioned but I like the simple plastic pink flamingos of the past. The original plastic flamingos were sold in packs of 2- one bird standing upright while the other bent its head as if eating. Designed by Don Featherstone in 1957 the plastic pink flamingos were made with his signature on the underside of the birds.

Plus I really think pink flamingo “lawn greetings” should make a comeback.  So, put on your black sweats, tip toe into your unsuspecting friends’ yard and plant an adorable flock of flamingos in their garden!
